A submeter is a secondary meter installed downstream of the main utility meter to measure consumption for a specific area, tenant, or piece of equipment.
Definition
A submeter measures consumption at a more granular level than the main utility meter — for a specific floor, tenant, department, or individual piece of equipment. Submetering enables cost allocation across multiple occupants and much more precise identification of where energy is actually being used within a site.
