A Building Management System (BMS), sometimes called a Building Automation System (BAS), is a centralised control system that monitors and directly operates a building's core equipment — HVAC, lighting, ventilation, access control, and sometimes fire and security systems.

Unlike an energy management system, which focuses on visibility, analysis, and reporting, a BMS is primarily a control layer: it executes schedules, responds to sensor input (temperature, occupancy), and allows facilities teams to adjust equipment settings centrally rather than manually at each unit.

BMS platforms are common in commercial and institutional buildings and are often the source of raw operational data — equipment run-time, setpoints, occupancy sensor triggers — that energy management or analytics platforms can layer additional insight on top of.
