An Energy Performance Indicator (EnPI) is a metric used, particularly under ISO 50001, to track energy performance over time in a way that accounts for variables outside operational control — such as production volume, occupancy, or weather (via degree-day normalisation). Common EnPIs include energy use per unit produced, per square metre, or per occupant, allowing fair comparison across different operating conditions.

Why It Matters

Raw consumption figures alone can be misleading if production volume or weather changes year to year — an EnPI isolates genuine efficiency change from these external factors, which is central to demonstrating credible improvement under ISO 50001.
